With experience across a diverse range of universities and having worked closely with several vice-chancellors, John has recently played a central role in developing an ambitious and distinctive long term strategy for Durham University. He is a member of Durham University’s wider executive group and leads the Strategic Planning Office’s work in relation to strategy development, university planning, institutional intelligence and risk management.
John has worked for a number of national policy bodies including the Scottish Funding Council, Universities UK and the Higher Education Academy. In these roles he established a cross-sector framework for widening participation in Scotland, secured funding for the launch of the UK Research Integrity Office and facilitated innovation in flexible learning.
John leads the HESPA Member Network on Strategy Development. His qualifications include a degree in Sociology from the University of York and an MSc with Distinction in Organisational Change and Development from Sheffield Business School. His interests outside work include psychogeography and the music of David Bowie and Brian Eno.
